For many adults with diabetes, an HbA1c below 7% is a common treatment goal. But that target is not universal. Age, other illnesses, risk of hypoglycaemia and overall health can change the goal.

There is another limitation. Two people can have the same HbA1c while experiencing very different glucose patterns. One may have fairly steady readings, while another swings between highs and lows.

That is why doctors may look at glucose readings or continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data when needed.

Early initiation of statins after diagnosis of type 2 diabetes was associated with a lower risk of dementia, according to a study presented at ESC Congress 2026 and published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe.

A new study found that diagnoses of type 2 diabetes in young adults are on the rise in England, while rates are falling in older age groups. The findings highlight an urgent need to do more to prevent type 2 diabetes in younger generations.

Using data from the National Diabetes Audit, researchers analysed new type 2 diabetes diagnoses between 2011 and 2024. They found that rates of diagnosis increased in adults under 40, but declined in people aged 60 – 79. The steepest increases were in women in their 20s and 30s.

While people from Black and South Asian backgrounds remain disproportionately affected, increases in early-onset type 2 diabetes were also seen in White populations.

Today, the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) released the “Standards of Care in Diabetes—2026” (Standards of Care), the gold standard in evidence-based guidelines for diagnosing and managing diabetes and prediabetes.
